CBD for Migraines – Risks and Research

CBD is making headlines for its potential healing benefits, but how much do we really know? Let’s review.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound found in hemp plants. Not to be confused with the psychoactive constituent of cannabis, THC, CBD is non-psychoactive; meaning, it won’t cause the “high” commonly linked to marijuana. Although there are many different cannabinoids found in hemp, CBD has quickly become the most discussed. One of the most exciting discoveries is how it may help migraineurs.

Migraine is the third most prevalent condition in the world, affecting an estimated 1 billion people. Men, women, and children are all at risk of this chronic condition, and finding relief can be an uphill battle.

While research is still limited (primarily due to regulations on CBD), studies suggest CBD may help different forms of chronic and acute pain, including migraine.

The CBD industry is thriving right now. From tinctures and capsules to skincare products, it seems CBD has taken the U.S. by storm. But CBD isn’t anything new. In fact, it has been used to treat a wide range of health conditions for over 3,000 years.

CBD for Migraines: Does it Work?

Unfortunately, there is no cut and dry answer here. The research is up-and-coming, and many individuals have found relief from migraine pain thanks to CBD, but this isn’t the end of the road. Because there are so many different types of migraine, and individuals have various symptoms and overall experiences, it is difficult to say that CBD is the sole answer. However, several studies have shown that CBD can help with chronic and episodic migraine symptoms.

Another study suggests that CBD may stop the body from metabolizing anandamide, a compound associated with pain regulation. As mentioned above, CBD decreases inflammation, which may reduce pain associated with migraines and other internal responses. 

Potential Risks

When it comes to taking CBD for migraine relief, you must discuss your case with a physician. While it is considered safe, it may interact with some medications and cause side effects such as:

●       Fatigue

●       Diarrhea

●       Changes in appetite

CBD is projected to be a $16 billion industry in the U.S. by 2025. And while some believe it’s just another trend, CBD has been around for centuries and has a laundry list of benefits.
